The Papua New Guinea School Certificate (for Years 9-10)


Year 10 PNG students who wish to be awarded a PNG School Certificate must take English - First Language, Mathematics, Combined/Coordinated Science, Social Science and at least two of the following subjects: Business Studies, Music, Art and Design, Design and Technology, Family and Consumer Studies, Information Technology or Computer Applications.


The Papua New Guinea Higher School Certificate (for Years 11-12)

Papua New Guinean students of Grade 11 and 12 at Port Moresby International School are offered the choice to study the required subjects for eligibility to receive the PNG Higher School Certificate. 

The Papua New Guinea Education Department prescribes a set course of study in English, Mathematics A or B, the Sciences and the Humanities, which are externally examined at the end of Grade 12.  Optional courses as offered by the school and approved by the PNG Education Department are internally assessed and externally acknowledged.

All courses offered at Port Moresby International School for the requirement of the PNG HSC are also ACT accredited, thus enabling a PNGHSC student to obtain two certificates at the end of Grade 12 and giving every opportunity for acceptance to the University of Papua New Guinea and overseas Universities. The required course of study for students in Grade 11 is: (All students should take at least 6 subjects English and Mathematics are compulsory.)

PNGHSC Accredited ACT Course

* English

Language & Literature or World Literature

* Mathematics A or

Specialist Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Mathematical Applications T or

Mathematical Applications PNG

* Mathematics B

Mathematical Applications T or General Maths A

Any four (4) of the following:


* Sciences Biology, Chemistry, Physics   (choice of only 2)
* Humanities History, Geography, Economics
* Arts Arts & Design T
* Performing Arts Towards Contemporary Music T
* Technology

Furniture Construction A, Information Technology T,

Information Technology A (Computer Operations), Food and People A

One fo the following may be taken but it will not be accredited to the PNGHSC:

* French Beginning French, Continuing French
* Physical Education Sport & Recreation A
* Community Service CAS
* PNG Prep / ACT Prep
